About ClimaShield Commercial Roofing

Most roofing companies are built by roofers. This one was built from two directions — 17 years inside PPG on one side, 35+ years of general contracting on the other — and that changes how we look at a roof.

Founded From Two Directions

ClimaShield Commercial Roofing was founded in 2017. Most roofing companies are built by roofers. This one was built by people who arrived at buildings from two different places.

One side is materials — 17 years inside PPG, in coatings chemistry, safety engineering and national sales management, alongside energy industry experience.

That is not a roofing background. It is a materials background: what a coating is made of, what it bonds to, what makes it fail, and how to read a technical data sheet as engineering rather than as marketing. Nearly two decades around the people who formulate these products and the specifications that govern them — and the habit of asking what a system will do in year twelve rather than on the day it is installed.

The other side is construction — more than 35 years as a general contractor. Structures, decks, permits, engineered work, and the practical experience of putting up and taking apart real buildings. That is knowing what is under a roof, and what it takes to fix it when the answer is not a coating.

Neither half is sufficient on its own, and that is the point.

A coatings company sees a restoration on every roof, because that is the tool it has. A conventional roofing contractor sees a tear-off, for the same reason. Between the two you get the actual answer — and the range to deliver it, whether that means sealing a standing seam or pulling engineered plans, repairing joists and re-decking a building.

We are family-owned, based in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and the company still runs the way it started: read the specification, look at the substrate, and recommend the system that fits the building.

It Changes the First Question We Ask

A roofing contractor walks onto a failing roof and asks: what does this roof need?

Coming from the materials side, we ask something narrower first: what is actually failing here — and will anything bond to what is left?

That question leads somewhere different more often than you would expect.

On a metal roof, the panels are almost never the problem — the fasteners, seams and laps are, and those can be repaired and sealed. On a single-ply roof, the membrane may be weathered while the insulation underneath is bone dry and perfectly serviceable. In both cases the roof can be restored for a fraction of what a replacement costs.

But the same question also produces the opposite answer. If the insulation is saturated, nothing bonds and nothing lasts — a coating there is money spent on a roof that is already gone. If the deck has failed, no coating is structure.

The question does not favour restoration. It just gets to the truth faster — and because we have the construction side too, we are not steering you toward whichever answer we happen to sell.

We Carry Five Manufacturer Lines, on Purpose

We are not tied to one brand. We are the experts, and we pick the system we believe is best for your particular facility and situation.

There is a simple problem with carrying a single manufacturer’s line: if you only sell one system, every roof needs that system.

We carry Conklin, Carlisle, PPG/VersaFlex and Castagra for coatings and membranes, plus BASF spray foam. Your roof gets the system that fits its substrate, its exposure and its remaining service life — not the one we happen to stock.

That is a harder way to run a company. It means training on multiple systems and knowing the differences well enough to defend a recommendation. It is also the only honest way to say “this is the right system for your building.”

Commercial Low-Slope. That's It.

We do not do residential. We do not do shingles. We do not do steep-slope.

Commercial low-slope roofing is a genuinely different trade — different systems, different failure modes, different codes, different buyers, and different consequences when it goes wrong. Doing one thing means we are actually good at it, and it means the crew on your building has done your kind of roof many times before.

Worth Knowing About

S&T Bank Arena. A 70,000+ square foot standing-seam metal roof over an ice facility — our largest restoration. We primed for corrosion, sealed every seam and lap, and coated it in a highly reflective white elastomeric acrylic. Interior temperature dropped 20°F, and the rink can now make ice through August and September — months it previously could not operate in. That is not a roofing outcome. It is operating revenue the building did not have before.

Cleveland Brothers. A 60,000 square foot Caterpillar machine shop full of motors, transmissions, gearboxes and dynos — equipment you cannot expose to weather and cannot easily move. Aged black EPDM, restored in place with a fabric-reinforced acrylic system. No tear-off, no shutdown.

Delaney Chevrolet. The other kind of answer. Fifty to sixty years of roofing in roughly four layers, and an estimated 40,000 pounds of wet, saturated material removed from a dealership showroom. That roof was finished, we said so, and we replaced it.

The Rule We Actually Run On

We would rather lose a job than sell you one that fails.

That sounds like something every company says, so here is what it means in practice on our roofs:

  • We tell building owners their roof does not need replacing when it does not — even when they have already decided to replace it
  • We tell them a coating is the wrong answer when the insulation is wet, and we do not coat it anyway
  • We survey for moisture before we quote, because finding saturation afterwards is how coating systems fail and how contractors end up in disputes
  • We say when another contractor’s recommendation is right
  • We document every inspection and every project in writing, with photographs, and you keep the report whether or not you hire us

Roofs last a long time and this region is not that big. A roof we should not have sold is a problem that finds its way back to us, and we would rather not have it.

Four Trades, One Company, One Contract

ClimaShield Commercial Roofing is one of four divisions. The others are ClimaShield Spray Foam (closed-cell insulation), ClimaShield Protective Coatings (industrial coatings, polyurea and waterproofing), and ClimaShield Floor Coatings.

All four are registered names of a single legal entity. That matters more than it sounds:

When a building needs more than the roof, it is one contract. One certificate of insurance. One lien waiver. One party responsible. Not four subcontractors to coordinate and, when water shows up at a transition, four parties pointing at each other.

We have done it. At Old Thunder Brewing in Blawnox we installed the spray foam roof, insulated the brewery walls with closed-cell foam, and coated the floors in the brewhouse and behind the bar. At Bloxdorf Contracting we did the spray foam roof, closed-cell foam in every exterior wall, and the below-grade waterproofing.

Buildings do not leak in the middle of the roof. They leak at the transitions — roof to wall, wall to foundation, penetration to deck. Those are exactly the places where split responsibility fails, and exactly the places one contractor can get right.
